Dear Friend:
I hold two profound truths close to my heart: hearing God’s voice is essential, but merely hearing the truth is not enough—obedient action is the lifeblood of change.
We train ourselves to distinguish God’s voice from surrounding distractions by investing at least a few minutes daily in prayer and studying His Word. This not only cultivates and deepens this essential relationship but also changes our hearts and minds.
Years ago, when my father’s health began to wane, Cynthia and I opened our home to him. In the still of the night, we would often awaken to hear Dad’s voice, prompting us to respond to his needs with attention and love.
In 1 Samuel 3, young Samuel also heard a voice in the night. He had never had a message from the Lord before and thought Eli was calling him. Initially confused, Samuel seeks Eli’s guidance, who finally realizes it’s a divine calling. “Go lie down,” Eli advises, “and if He calls, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’”
There are moments in life when God beckons us to venture into the frightening unknown, which require trusting Him in faith to choose obedience. To quote my friend, Corrie ten Boom, “When we are powerless to do a thing, it is a great joy that we can come and step inside the ability of Jesus.”
