An ancient "oil press," the meaning of the name Gethsemane, was discovered near the garden that bears its name. The garden was located on the Mount of Olives across the Kidron Valley from Jerusalem. It is here that we remember Jesus praying the night before His death.

"Let it pass. Let this cup pass," He pleaded to the Father three times in the shadows of the olive trees, in the loneliness of His choice. "Let this cup of suffering pass."

He fought the battle here. And then, refus-ing to submit to the distance that a stubborn will creates, He submitted, "My Father . . . not what I want but what You want." It was one will, as it always had been. There was no distance between them. There would be enough distance tomorrow. But tonight, under the gnarled olive trees, He drew close. "Not My will, but Yours be done." (See Matthew 26:36 Ð 56.)

In His surrender, He won.

So did we.
